More than 500 students are vying for the Rockwood Music Academy’s coveted “most athletic” award, with the award’s recipients based on academic performance and student achievements.
The awards, handed out by the school’s Music Academy Board of Directors and presented on Tuesday, were revealed as the awards ceremony wrapped up in Cleveland.
Students from Rockwood are among more than 100,000 Ohio students eligible for the award, which recognizes students who have made significant contributions to the Cleveland area’s music scene and its future.
The students selected by the board are among an array of musicians, artists, educators and business leaders who attended the awards banquet at the Cleveland Zoo.
“It’s not just the students that we are looking for,” said board president and former Cleveland mayor Joe D’Agostino.
“It’s the people, the people that are coming out of Cleveland, that are going to bring that energy and that passion to Rockwood.”
The board selected a wide variety of students who graduated in the 2017-18 academic year, from students from across Ohio.
Students from Akron, Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Cuyahoga Falls, Columbus, Cudell Recreation Center, Lakewood, the Cleveland Heights Arts Center, Crain’s Field and Eastlake College also attended the event.
The Rockwood Academy, which opened in October, is the state’s oldest music academy.
It has a campus in the northeast corner of the city and is ranked No. 7 among the nation’s best music academies by the Association of American Universities.
More than 600 Rockwood students attended the 2017 awards banquet, with nearly 300 of those receiving awards for academic achievement and community involvement.
“There’s a lot of people who have been part of our community for many years and the academy is where they are,” D’Agnostino said.
“And we know that when you have a large group of students from one of the country’s great cities, the students have an advantage in learning and learning about music.
That’s a win-win.”
The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on KWTV-TV.
